For those of you that follow the podcast and blog you know I have been waiting for the new MacBooks to come out. My current MacBook is surviving but just barely! I really need to plant it on a desk and not keep moving it around. My iSight is toast so I borrowed a friend of mines Logitech “Logicool” web camera. See picture below for comparison.

It works good for most things in OSX and on the web but I cant get iMovie09 to recognize it no matter what I do. This is not that big of a deal, but there are some occasions where I would like to import directly from this iSight replacement. I searched the web and found some hacks that were supposed to work but they didn’t end up working for me. I have given up and just decided to use PhotoBooth for capturing video if I find it necessary. PhotoBooth allows you to switch cameras in the Camera Menu.

The Logicool camera has a Carl Zeiss Lens and doesn’t need any drivers. If you want to have the ability to control brightness, contrast, and saturation you can load up CamTwist. The CamTwist Effects Menu has a Brightness effect which gives you the 3 controls.

I am kind of thinking about picking up a Mac Mini to make the base of my podcasting and videocasting setup, or at least one of a couple systems. I thought it would be fun to do the math to figure out how much it would cost to get a Mac Mini system up and running. I will assume that I don’t have an extra mouse, monitor, or keyboard laying around. I will also do a couple of systems just for the fun of it again. The prices will come from Dell, Apple, and Amazon.

Mac Mini System #1:

Cheapest Mac Mini $599.00
20″ Dell LCD Monitor $179.00
Logitech Scrolling Optical Mouse $11.83
Apple Keyboard $49.00
__________________________
Total Price: $838.83

Apple Mac Mini System #2

Mac Mini $799.00
24″ Dell LCD Monitor $259.00
Apple Wireless Magic Mouse $69.00
Apple Wireless Keyboard $69.00

__________________________
Total Price: $1196.00

Now those are some interesting numbers aren’t they? The cheapest iMac is currently $1199.00 and that gives you a 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo versus the Mac Mini’s 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo . Now this article is not trying to sway you in any direction, in actuality it’s an article for me that I thought would help some of you out there. Hmmm….Do I go for the Mac Mini as the base for my “New Media Studio”? Or do I put down the money on one of the new iMac’s? Hard decision for any of us out there, isn’t it?

So if you are interested in seeing what the inside of one of these technological works of art looks like, follow this link. When I look at the care they take to dissect hardware it brings back memories of trying to take apart one of the original iMacs with a buddy of mine. Needless to say it never did go back together very well and ended up looking like a cool piece of modern art or a bomb. LOL
